Ian got a set of illustrated classics for Christmas. Naturally, we have read all stories involving sword fighting first. The Three Musketeers was one of his favorites. Recently, we finished reading King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. It's all Ian can talk about.....King Arthur Pendragon this and King Arthur Pendragon that.
I know this will shock many of you, but we just got satellite TV at our house. I know. We lived so happily without it for such a long time. At any rate it will make it easier for us to watch LOST in the comfort of our own home. So, we have Showtime free for 3 months. I turned the TV on yesterday morning to see if there were any movies I wanted to DVR. There seems to be a lot of Twilight on there, which really doesn't interest any of us, but when we stumbled upon The First Knight, Ian was transfixed. The movie starts with a sword fight, which immediately (of course) drew him in.
I'd never seen the movie before, so I thought I should watch it with him, just in case. Richard Gere (is that how you spell his name??) played Launcelot, which really made it difficult for me to watch because not only do I not find him handsome and brave, I find him slimy and creepy. It makes it hard for me to believe Guinevere could have taken him seriously.
Anyway, it turns out Ian runs and hides his eyes if there is so much of a kiss on screen (there were two). We had a few conversations during the movie trying to explain why people were so upset.....especially after Launcelot was caught kissing Guinevere.
Later, while we were having ice cream together, Ian had this conversation with Tyler:
Ian: Launcelot got put in jail, but it was a pretty nice jail.
Tyler: Why was he in jail?
Ian: King Arthur was mad at him.
Tyler: Why was he upset with Launcelot?
Ian: Well, someone was runnin' around kissin' his wife!
Tyler and I are still laughing about it this morning.
Just for the record, if Launcelot was really like Richard Gere, and King Arthur was really like Sean Connery, and I was Guinevere, I would have totally gone for King Arthur.

Potty Training Transgressions
I admit it. I had no idea what I was doing when I potty trained Ian. I hadn't done my research. He wasn't ready. But, I was tired of changing diapers. I did everything wrong. I was frustrated. He knew it. Eventually, he conformed.....after months of pooping on the lawn....while carrying on conversations with other people....who were at the pool (which was practically in our yard).
I think I warped him forever. He runs to the bathroom, like he's been holding it forever, every say 5 to 10 minutes. And, every now and then, he pulls down his underwear, and just pees on the floor. He hasn't always done this, the behaviors go in spurts, no pun intended. At first, I thought he had a urinary tract infection. But, the other day, he calmly explained to me that he goes to the bathroom so often because he doesn't want to accidentally pee on his underwear, and he certainly would never pee in Cameron's room, he only pees in his own room. And I thought I was just imagining the urine smell in there. I thought I was going crazy.
It's clear to me now that I have driven him crazy. It's really true what parents say, the first child is the experiment. How do I right the wrong? I've tried to calmly explain that you should really store it up, and go to the bathroom every hour or two, and that we never pee on the floor, only in the toilet. It doesn't sink in. We've tried punishing him for peeing on the floor. Doesn't change anything. The problem is, we don't always know when he does it. And that is just gross. So, we've resorted to taking away everything that is dear and precious from him. NO TV for 24 hours. It doesn't hurt the little fellow at all....in fact....he got out his puzzles today. It may open up a whole new world.
Still, I wish I could somehow go back and erase that whole part of my so-called parenting. But, I guess it's only fair that I have to mend what I have broken. I just wish it didn't involve a little, innocent person. To earn my way out of pergatory, I am just going to have to crawl over the bedroom floor several times a day employing my only true superhero power: my sense of smell.
